'The Lottery'

The story, 'The Lottery' is relevant to today, as violence can take place at any time, any place and can be carried out by anyone.

In the story, 'The Lottery' the Lottery was conducted in a very peaceful and serene environment. "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely, and the grass was richly green." This was the environment that the Lottery was conducted in.

The occurrence of bad and violent events usually take place in gloomy weather and chaotic settings. Who would ever imagine that in a story, a violent event would occur in a bright and cheery setting and not in a chaotic one.

The author is stating that violence does not just take place when you are in a dangerous place, but that violence can also take place in a safe place. You never know!

In the story, 'The Lottery' is conducted by villagers. Some of the villagers are even good friends of the victim. Though some of the villagers are just neighbours to the victim, they never realise that they are actually stoning someone to death. They are just working towards what Old Man Warner had said. "'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' First thing you know, we'd all be eating stewed chickweed and acorns."

People in this world that we are living in now do not care of the consequences of their action. They are only aware of what they are working to get, never caring of the hurt they bring to other people. That is what that is relevant to today.

Today, we have our own form of 'lottery', but there is no violence when the results are published. Our form of lottery, unlike theirs, is for lucky people to gain money. This lottery, in some form, resembles their form of lottery. Villagers that take part in their form of lottery do not think of the consequence of killing their neighbour but only think of the things that they can gain through the lottery.

People take part in our form of lottery without thinking of the consequence of using money to buy their 4D, Toto or Horse Betting tickets. All they care for is to strike the first prize and gain money. Some people are so crazy over the lottery that even as they are becoming bankrupt, they continue in buying lottery tickets. It is not them who suffers in the end, but the people around them, their families.
